Buying YOUR Wedding Gown: In-Store vs online

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

It can feel as if there are as many great places to buy a dress as there are gorgeous gowns themselves. How is a Girl to decide where to start? Here are some things to think about before you start your planning process.

There is no aspect of your wedding that can not be obtained or provided online these days and this includes your wedding dress.  Online retailers are able to give you a wide selection at low prices and they do not need to worry about how to measure brides, give advice on styles, colors or shapes. Another aspect of the convenience of the internet is to compare different designers, styles and a few websites that have prices. Unfortunately, the cons of buying your wedding dress online are numerous and many too important to ignore. First you can not see the dress in person to feel the quality of the fabric, look at the seams, try on the fit or feel the weight of the dress, like you can at a Bridal shop. You can see an example of a representation of the dress in a photograph, one made in the best possible light, in the best angle, to make it look attractive to customers, but may look very different when you try it on. You will also find that the colors displayed on a computer screen differ from reality, so the light ivory dress that you like may actually be a much yellower ivory that may or may not complement your skin or go with your bridal color scheme.

The service you receive from online retailers will also be different.  They do not have professional experts to help you get measured and advise you on what suits and fits you best. When you find your dress for a low price online beware of return policies or lack thereof and the reputation of the company/website. Online retailers are always hard to contact for customer service or issues and are not liable for purchases made if they fold or go bankrupt.

The next question that is a make or break factor for brides is the ability to try on the dresses first before making a final decision. Of course most retailers have a return policy but that can take time and money. There is also something so traditional and magical to visit a bridal shop with your mom or best friend to try on dresses, find your dream dress and share the special moment.

Buying your wedding dress online can be budget saver but you could be disappointed because the dress you ordered is lost or not what you were promised ultimately costing you more than your allotted budget.

Many designers have strict rules about being aware of unauthorized retailers and counterfeit products. A quote from Maggie Sottero suggest “Purchasing products from unauthorized sources, either on the web or in unauthorized retail locations can involve certain risks…The products could be copies, knock-offs, counterfeits or imitations that are certain to be of inferior quality. Only genuine Maggie Sottero products offer the fit, quality and true value for which Maggie Sottero is known…”

- 2 Months Before – Mail invitations. Make appointment with seamstress for first gown fitting. Book your stylist and try out big-day hairstyles. Book a make-up artist and go for a trial run. Get all your accessories done. Write Vows. Purchase gifts for parents and wedding party.

- 1 Month Before – Bride: Have Final Gown fitting with seamstress and bring your Main of Honor with you to see how the dress bustles. Check on Bridesmaids gown. Apply for marriage license. Make last minute adjustments if necessary.

- 2 Weeks Before – Review final RSVP list. Deliver must-have shot list to photographer and videographer. Deliver final song list to DJ. Bride: Get last pre-wedding haircut and color.

- 1 Week Before – Give caterer final guest head count. Plan reception seating chart. Call and confirm all arrangements. Groom: get hair trimmed. Attend Bachelor/ette party.

Real Brides, real customers become the face of TRUDYS

Beautiful Models, Jenna, Shana, Tara, Angela, & Brandi

Beautiful Models, Jenna, Shana, Tara, Angela, & Brandi

Our 2010 Outdoor Wedding Faire & Fashion Show was a wonderful success.  This year we wanted to feature real brides, real customers in our favorites from the season.  I must say, we had an over whelming response to brides who wanted to be the “Face of TRUDYS”, and it was truly touching.  I wish I could have selected all of them, but then the show would have lasted a few hours!  We were fortunate to have 11 stunning models represent TRUDYS, be a part of our show, and become a part of our store.  They walked the runway in gowns by Lazaro, Pronovias, Maggie Sottero, Casablanca, Enzoani, Morilee and more!   Each one of them has a touching story to share with me.  Whether it was about their bridal planning process, their wedding look, venue, honeymoon, hairstyle, wedding party and most importantly, their LOVE story it made me feel proud to be involved and feel a part of their special day. Ladies, A big Thank You, for making our show a success, for your countless smiles, and for letting us get to know you a little better!  You really did overcome many obstacles (trying on countless dresses with me, walking out in front of a thousand ++ people, working the runway during a silicon valley heat wave) with that being said, I hope that your future as Husband and Wife, is utter bliss.  That those smiles get even brighter and for you Tara-one day you’ll come into TRUDYS 10 years from now, searching for “The Dress”!

Of course, a bridal faire would not be complete if we didn’ have the right vendors representing and partaking in the faire.  You all did a phenomenal job, our brides gave us such positive feedback, our wheels are already spinning for next years event.  And I must not leave out Marcia Coleman-Joyner from A Joyous Occasion, she did an incredible job with the show, down to every last detail.  She truly is a top notch Wedding Planner and I am very proud to have worked with her on the show, words cannot express the gratitute and respect I have for her and her professionalism.

On Location Hair & Makeup by Cindy and Ofelia and their team did a beautiful job with giving our brides an understated alluring look.  With smokey eyes, natural lips and stunning hairstyles, perfect for all of our feathers and flowers the look was complete!  You two truly have a talent, and it shows.

For you brides to be reading this, go to our homepage trudysbrides.com for a list of all the vendors at the show as well as upcomming video footage of the fashion show and pictures.
